How do I get on the Bus?

Building a Green Bus Stop is a great tangible way to give back to the Asheville community and make it a better place to live.  The WNC Green Building Council organizes different contributors into teams of volunteers, so Contact Us and get on the bus! 

Who’s Involved?

*Donors & Sponsors are listed on a permanent plaque in the shelter and on our website*
WNC Green Building Council – administers the program and organizes volunteers and donors
Community Members/Groups – donate your labor, materials or funds to build a shelter
Architects – donate your design services to create a distinctive shelter
Builders – donate your skills or work force to help build a shelter
Artists – donate your talent to create a unique bench, panel or other artistic component
Material Suppliers – help us by discounting or donating materials

What’s the Process?

  • Contact the WNCGBC – we are organizing teams for the next Green Bus Stops project
  • Determine Bus Stop Location – the City recommends shelter locations – or recommend a bus stop in your neighborhood
  • Design A Green Bus Stop – architect donates services to create a shelter that uses green building techniques and materials (Go to our Guidelines on the Resources page for more info)
  • Submit Design for Approval – the City reviews the initial designs and then construction documents for a building permit
  • Organize Construction Team – businesses, neighborhoods, schools, church groups and individuals can all lend a hand in building a Green Bus Stop
  • Build the Shelter – Enjoy working with your community while supporting mass transit, promoting green building and enhancing our City’s streetscapes
